Eu1/2Ba1/2TiO3 was prepared with the intent of building both ferromagnetism and ferroelectricity into the same crystal lattice. Ceramic samples prepared at 1500 °C exhibit a magnetization of 59 emu/g at 1.8 °K and 5 kOe applied field. Possible crystallographic ordering of Ba2+ and Eu2+ ions is thought to permit positive interactions among the magnetic ions. The material also exhibits ferroelectric behavior with a Curie temperature of 165 °K and a polarization of 9.5 μC/cm2 at an applied field of 15.7 kV/cm and 35 Hz. Eu1/2Ba1/2TiO3 is the first compound known to us to exhibit simultaneously ferroelectricity and a magnetic moment of this magnitude.
