The strategy currently pursued at IZFP to open a wider field of applications for ultrasonic arrays is described. A bundle of measures is performed to reduce the costs and at the same time to improve the capabilities and the reliability of ultrasonic array systems. Improved piezoelectric composite materials and phased array components on the basis of highly integrated electronic units are currently under development. Appropriate software for delay time calculation with respect to a large variety of inspection problems has been developed.
