The effect on the 57Fe Mössbauer spectrum of heating samples of Alibates flint has been studied. On heating at or above 275 °C, two changes in the 57Fe spectrum, subsequently recorded at room temperature or liquid nitrogen temperature, were observed : i) the thermal decomposition of α-FeOOH in the sample to yield α-Fe2O3, and ii) an apparent change in the recoil-free fraction of the α-Fe2O3 component. These preliminary results suggest that this technique may find some use in determining to what extend artifacts made from Alibates flint, and which may be of archaeological interest, have been heated by prehistoric peoples in the past.
