In use now for more than a decade, the International Space Station is due to remain in orbit until at least 2020. The article presents Thales-Alenia Space in Turin where many of its pressurised modules were built. At the basic mechanical level, design requirements for space hardware are both challenging and contradictory: spacecraft must be capable of withstanding the forces, mechanical vibrations and acoustic pressures.
