Intensity Generalization in EDR Audiometry

Abstract

Two groups of 15 normally hearing adults were conditioned on EDR audiometry to a 1 000 cps tone, one group at 60 dB hearing level and the other at 20 dB hearing level. All subjects were then given 25 extinction trials at 10 dB hearing level. The purpose of the study was to examine resistance to extinction when conditioning is accomplished at a level close to that of the test tone and at a level considerably higher. The EDR was measured using an amplifier which enabled interpretation of an EDR in terms of amplitude. Results indicate that conditioning which is established at an intensity close to that of the test tone results in greater resistance to extinction than conditioning established at an intensity farther away from the test zone. This is true whether amplitude or number of responses is used as the measure of strength of conditioning.
