
The article describes the problem of invasive earthworms in hardwood forests near the Great Lakes of the U.S. The extinction of the earthworms native to the region in the most recent Ice Age is noted, mentioning that earthworms extant in the area as of 2009 have been introduced through other means. The destruction of hardwood trees as a result of the earthworm infestation is discussed.
