Abstract

KEEN interest has been aroused by the newly discovered objects1 Maffei 1 and 2, which are believed to be nearby galaxies. There is no detectable radio emission2 from Maffei 1, which is probably an E3 or E4 galaxy, but Maffei 2 (at l = 136°, b = 0°) has been studied both in the radio continuum3–7 and the 21 cm hydrogen line6,7 with the conclusions that (a) it is an Sa or Sb galaxy with a maximum rotation velocity of about 200 km s−1, on the assumption that the angle between the rotation axis and the line of sight is 70°; (b) the radial velocity with respect to the Sun is6 (25 ± 10) km s−1 or7 −28 km s−1; (c) the “effective diameter”, within which there is half the total hydrogen, is6 10′.2; (d) the half-power dimensions of the continuum source are7 5′ × 3′, although Bell et al.3 find an upper limit of 2′ for the angular size at 3,240 MHz.
