Observations of extended radio sources are interpreted in terms of a picture for radio source evolution involving multiple ejections of ram pressure confined plasmons in which instabilities lead to the formation of turbulent hot spots and to in situ particle acceleration. The hypothesis of ram pressure confined turbulent plasmons leads to a coherent theory of various radio phenomena including compact radio sources, radio tail galaxies and extended double radio sources.
