Abstract

MARTELL1 has described a plausible chain of events by which atmospheric radioactivity is incorporated into insoluble particles that are deposited in the lungs of tobacco smokers. The subsequent long exposure of the lungs to alpha activity is a strong candidate for the cause of bronchial cancer. Here we provide evidence for one of the steps in the sequence.
