In this its second annual report the Committee on Glaciers submits all the data it possesses concerning the variations in length of glaciers in the continental United States and Alaska in tabular form. This being the first tabulation, it has seemed desirable to include the records of past years as far back as they are known, so that there shall result as complete a foundation as possible, upon which the records of future years may be built. In general, it has been the aim of the Committee to conform closely in this report to the simple and effective methods of tabulation employed by the Commission des Glaciers of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics. In a number of instances, however, explanatory notes have seemed necessary for the intelligent interpretation of the record; and in the case of the great Alaskan glaciers, whose large‐scale oscillations are only imperfectly known from visits by exploring expeditions at irregular intervals, qualitative expressions often have been used instead of quantitative figures.
