Abstract

A new Global Positioning System Lightning Index could provide a better lightning forecast for the launches of the NASA Shuttle and other commercial and military launches from the Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida, which are in a high lightning‐flashdensity region.The index measures the amount of water vapor in the atmosphere, which can help to create the positive and negative charges in a thundercloud.
