The oxidation of 20 hydrocarbons, having different structure, by nitric oxide has been investigated on composite lead oxide catalysts. The CH3-group, conjugated with a double bond or the aromatic ring, is attacked by NO to form cyano group. Nitric oxide is reduced to N2O and N2. Pb-Ti-O, Pb-Sn-O and Pb-Zr-O systems proved to be the most effective catalysts. Pb2+ acts as an active component.
