AbstractAlthough many studies focusing on biomimetic design do exist, there is no systematic work for reviewing and investigating into the design architecture (such as the integral and modular one) of biological systems. The objective of the present paper is to study the design architecture of such systems. Several indicative examples are examined and discussed. Moreover, methods for the definition of a product's design architecture through biomimicry/biomimetics are presented.
