Technological Challenges in Extractive Metallurgy and Refining of Nb, Ta and Preparation of their Compounds & Alloys

Abstract

Efforts have been put towards industrial adaptability of the useful knowledge gained from lab scale to reliable pilot scale for production of refractory metals like Ta & Nb. Electron beam refining is used for production of these refractory metals in their pure form. Processes are developed for production of tantalum & niobium oxides/compounds, K2TaF7, Ta powder, Ta capacitors, Nb thermit, Nb metal granules, RRR Nb, Nb base alloys such as ZrNb master alloy, Nb47%Ti, C-103, Nb1%Zr0.1%C, Nb5%Mo1%Zr0.1%C, Nb10%W, Nb10%W2.5% Zr, and Zr2.5%Nb, ZrNbB, Ta10%W, Al coated Zr powder etc.
