
Recent studies have revealed a central role of hormonal signaling, especially the insulin and insulin-like growth factor-1 signaling, in lifespan and aging in diverse organisms, ranging from yeast to mammals. These discoveries further indicate that aging is a well-controlled process regulated by pathways that affect development, growth and metabolism. Moreover, the role of hormonal signaling together with caloric restriction and metabolism seems to be especially well conserved throughout evolution.
