Postnatal losses encountered in cloned calves are extensive. Because of their high value and their apparent tendency to develop certain conditions at a higher frequency than normal calves, cloned calves are managed differently from other calves. Problems most commonly reported include respiratory failure, pulmonary hypertension, increased birth weight, enlarged umbilical vessels, musculoskeletal abnormalities, various congenital defects, and abnormal immune function. Careful monitoring and aggressive treatment of the calves immediately after birth is described.
