Abstract

L'étude comparée de la longueur, de la largeur et de la hauteur des vertèbres successives qui constituent l'axe vertébral chez l'anguille (Anguilla anguilla), la truite arc-en-ciel (Oncorhynchus mykiss), le chinchard (Trachurus trachurus) et la bonite (Sarda orientalis) permet de confirmer que la colonne vertébrale présente une régionalisation morpho-anatomique plus complexe que la simple division en deux régions troncale et caudale classiquement admise. Avec les données morphologiques obtenues, il est possible de dresser quatre profils vertébraux différents et caractéristiques des quatre modes de nage de type axial ainsi représentés : mode anguilliforme (anguille), mode pseudo-carangiforme (truite), mode carangiforme (chinchard) et mode thunniforme (bonite). Le positionnement relatif des maxima de longueur, hauteur et largeur vertébrales par rapport à la longueur des animaux est caractéristique du mode de nage axial ; très proche de la tête dans le mode anguilliforme, il se situe pratiquement au milieu de la colonne vertébrale dans le mode subcarangiforme, alors qu'il est très postérieur dans les modes thunniforme et carangiforme, qui apparaissent finalement relativement proches.
