Using natural products to reduce cardiovascular disease(CVD) risk is a topic of great interest to patients and healthcare providers. One such family of products is plant sterols orin saturated form, plant stanols, both of which are encom-passed by the term ‘phytosterols.’ Plant sterols and stanols arenaturally sourced in vegetable oils, cereals, nuts, fruits, andvegetables, or might be added to enrich certain foods, such asyogurts, cheeses, juices, or cereal products to yield higherconcentrations of plant sterol per serving. Plant sterols in foodand added as supplements have been shown to reduce serumlow-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol by up to 10% wheningested in amounts totaling 2-3 g/d.
