Abstract Titanium in sapphire (Al 2 O 3 :Ti) shows a near-infrared and a blue emission band. The former is due to Ti(III), the latter to Ti(IV). This is confirmed by a number of experiments in which either the firing atmosphere or the chemical composition was varied. An earlier assignment of the blue emission in the literature is shown to be incorrect.
