Abstract Section 2 of this paper presents a simple way to design an availability compliance test terminated at a fixed time. Test parameters are selected by means of supplied nomograms. Section 3 contains a mathematical analysis of the test type in question with approximations adapted for systems with high availability ( >0·95 ). Up times and down times of the tested system are assumed to be gamma distributed. The analysis explains how the nomograms of Section 2 were calculated.
