Abstract The interest in astronomy has much increased in recent years among people of all ages. The Preston Municipal Observatory has ventured the experiment of organizing the study of the subject in schools and by encouraging it also in evening classes, in lectures for the adult public, in local astronomical society work, and by active participation of advanced students at the observatory's activities. Some of the encouraging results obtained in this important field are discussed.
