Abstract The effect of heating rate on thermal runaway has been investigated by thermal analysis. For the materials studied in the present work there was an increase in the ignition temperature as the heating rate was increased. At high heating rates the effect was largely determined by the thermal relaxation time. A simple analytical model of the experiment accounted for the trend in the results but led to unacceptable values for the thermokinetic parameters of the system.
