Abstract The presence ofCe 3+ (4f 1 ) in SrTiO 3 results in a broad optical absorption in the visible region. This is ascribed to a charge-transfer transition from Ce 3+ to Ti 4+ . This material is not successful as an anode in photoelectrochemical cells. The reasons for this are discussed.
