Abstract The luminescence of ScBO 3 −Pr 3+ is investigated. The emission consists of four spin-allowed transitions and one spin-forbidden transition from the 4 f ; 5 d to the 4 f ; 2 configuration. The Stokes shift is very small (1500cm −1 ). In YBO 3 and LaBO 3 this Stokes shift increases to 3000cm −1 ). These data are compared with those for Ce 3+ , Sb 3+ and Bi 3+ in these borates. This yields information on the dependence of the Stokes shift on the lattice. This can be used to make predictions. Here it is applied to glasses.
