Abstract The luminescence of Eu 3 ReO 8 has been investigated by laser spectroscopy. In spite of the high Eu 3+ concentration the compound shows 5 D 1 and efficient 5 D 0 emission. The inefficient cross relaxation is ascribed to a large energy mismatch. By selective excitation emission is observed from three different Eu 3+ ions in agreement with crystallographic data. Energy migration is, therefore, not taking place. Even at 300 K its influence is only of restricted value. Partial quenching of the 5 D 0 emission occurs by one-step energy transfer to centers which contain Re 6+ ions.
