Abstract The tetrahedral clusters Zn 4 X (X O, Se) and Cd 4 X (X S, Se) show efficient photoluminescence at room temperature in the sodalites Zn 4 X(BO 2 ) 6 and Cd 4 X(AlO 2 ) 6 , respectively. The lowest absorption band is at higher energy, and the Stokes shift is larger than in other Zn/Cd chalcogenide clusters.
