Abstract The luminescence of SrB 4 O 7 :Yb 2+ is reported and discussed. The quantum efficiency is high, the Stokes shift small, and the emission maximum at short wavelength (≈ 360 nm). At low temperatures extended vibrational structure appears in all the luminescence spectra. A comparison with other divalent rare-earth ions in this host lattice is made.
