Abstract The luminescence properties of Zn 0.999 Ru 0.001 (bipy) 3 SO 4 , Ru(bipy) 3 Br 2 ·6H 2 O and Ru(bipy) 3 (ClO 4 ) 2 are reported. Emission and excitation spectra as well as the decay time and total luminescence intensity were measured between 4.2 and 300 K. The luminescence of Zn 0.999 Ru 0.001 (bipy) 3 SO 4 and Ru(bipy) 3 Br 2 ·6H 2 O can be described with a single-centre model. In Ru(bipy) 3 (ClO 4 ) 2 energy transfer between different types of Ru complexes is observed.
