
The bulge of the Galaxy as seen by IRAS forms a spatially concentrated system of long period cool variable stars. From the period distribution we show that a significant fraction of the IRAS bulge is younger than the globular cluster system. Thus the metal rich stars in the central ∼1 kpc of the Galaxy are not obviously part of the extended stellar spheroid.
