The nature of decision making in manufacturing organisations is traditionally hierarchical. This enables decision models at each level to be constructed which can be solved by the use of current techniques, while facilitating overall coordination of the decision making process. The modern manufacturing environment demands control and planning methodologies suited to the flexibility and responsiveness required of organisations. This paper considers some existing techniques and proposes a method for modern manufacturing control.
