Derrida’s reading of Kafka’s Before the Law poses the question “what is literature?” The question concerns the relation of the law to the institution of literature, the self-constituting laws of literature, the place of literature before the prohibited law. Spencer Brown’s Laws of Form offers the possibility of formalizing the law of the text before the law.
