The electroslag remelting process has been investigated from the point of view of ingot solidification, and experiments have been dOMe in both the laeoratory and pilot plant. The depth of the pool and its relation to the structure are described. Dipping of the electrode, switching off the current, and electrode changing all give rise to changes in the ingot structure. The crystal structure in the surface zone is important in determining the surface quality. Macrosegregation is found al fast melt rates.
