The possibility of achieving combustion at constant temperature in an internal combustion engine by using a ceramic matrix as a porous combustion chamber has recently been under discussion. This principle promises very low emissions of NOx, hydrocarbons and soot. However, a classic thermodynamic comparison of such an ideal theoretical working cycle with that of a diesel engine clearly shows an intolerable lack of efficiency and power. Consequently, tests would not be worthwhile.
