Today, nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions are probably the most frequently mentioned pollutants in exhaust gases from diesel engines, which are being used in large numbers as both main and auxiliary propulsion systems for ships. This article is a report of the results of a study carried out by the author at MAN B&W Diesel AG in Augsburg to determine actual ship NOx emissions from the entire existing civilian fleet in the year 2001.
