Soot emission during the manoeuvring of vessels is an issue that is to a great extent insufficiently resolved in practice even for engines operating without a visible exhaust gas plume under steady-state conditions. This article describes measures aimed at improving transient operation investigated by MAN B&W Diesel within the research project “Clean II” sponsored by the German Ministry of Research, and it presents the results achieved.
