This article describes a project in which the van Leer Foundation cooperated with the community in the area of Santa Fe, Granada in Spain. The project complements the structured programme (LOGSE) designed for children from 3–6 years, but the new element is the introduction of blocks and themes, designed to meet the needs of children from 0–3 years, within their families and community. In a series of workshops, parents were helped to understand the development of their children and were encouraged to initiate and use community facilities. In the evaluation of the project it was found that it had been successful in raising awareness in the community of the needs of young children, enhancing the self confidence of parents as educators of their youngest children as well as producing well balanced children, ready for the next stage of education. Future developments and extensions are discussed.
