This article gives a concise, yet thorough account of the life and work of Kovalevskaya, relating both to the mathematical community of late- nineteenth-century Europe. The author's main point, one frequently missed by writers on Kovalevskaya, is that Kovalevskaya was a full member of this community, not a curious exception tolerated for the novelty of being a woman.
