The enormous and self-replenishing supplies—perhaps 200 or 300 million tons—of these seaweeds in the oceans of the world have been commercially exploited so far primarily in the production of alginic acid, but the other carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, vitamins, enzymes and antibacterial substances in them and discussed here may hold even greater values.
