The hydrophilic and acid binding properties of alginates

Abstract

1. Sodium alginate possesses considerable water absorbing and water retaining properties. It is in this respect superior to the natural gums, methylcellulose and carboxymethylcellulose. 2. Sodium alginate and calcium alginate also possess acid binding properties of a similar order as carboxymethylcellulose. 3. The marked hydrophilic and water retaining properties of sodium alginate in neutral or mildly alkaline environment and the absence of swelling in strongly acid environment suggests that this material would be of value as a bulk laxative.
