Secondary succession of natural Korean pine forests

Abstract

The secondary succession of natural Korean pine(Pimis koraiensis) forests in Fenglin Nature Reserve, located at northern section of south slope of Xiaoxing’an Mountains, Heilongjiang, was investigated. The current forest types are represented by broadleaved mixed forests dominated by white birch(Betula platyphylla) and broadleavedconiferous mixed forest dominated by larch(Larix gmelini). The secondary forests developed after a fire in 1931. Studied results showed that coniferous species and hardwood species could replace the pioneer species together and the secondary forests could reach the climax community without passing the hard broadleaved stage. As the pioneer species for replacing Korean pine, the oak forest was faster, the following was white birch forest, and the last was larchwhite birch forest. For replacing spruce, the white birch forest and larchwhite birch forest had best results and the following was poplar forest and oak forest. White birch forest and larchwhite birch forest had best result in replacing fir forest.
