Studies by the Nutrition Communication Behavioral Change Project (NCBC) and the Applied Nutrition Education Project show that nutrition education programs have increased knowledge in nutrition improved nutrient intake and status and improved eating habits among women and young children. These programs mainly use growth monitoring methods as a means of detection. These methods however need to be coupled with an action program to help carry out recommendations from the growth monitoring aspect. Certain programs are models in this respect: Indonesias National Nutrition Program (UPGK) NCBC Haitis Program the Dominican Republics ANEP Ecuadors PEM-PAAMI and Indias USAID-assisted ICDS. 1st the program must create awareness of the link between nutrition and good health in the general community. Mothers then need to become an integral part of the program by developing an understanding of the process used. Community participation in the development of an educational plan is necessary to create an appropriate itinerary for each specific locale. The program must finally educate their workers in effective and behavior-changing counselling which will cause appropriate action to be taken by the mother. The above mentioned programs have all taken these steps to form cohesive and comprehensive education-action programs that have had major impacts on the health of their participants.
