Certain embedded clauses in Russian, particularly those introduced by ctoby, esli, cem, etc., can be both finite and infinitival. Russian infinitival embedded clauses have been studied less intensively by far than their finite counterparts. Many problems of their structure and usage have not been described in detail, such as, for example, the problem of their subject expression. When a clause is infinitival, its subject is not, as a rule, overtly expressed, as in (1):
