A simple, albeit approximate, derivation of the pull-out force of axisymmetric headed anchors is given by studying the growth of a penny crack in half space loaded only on its upper face. The initial diameter of the penny crack is equal to the head diameter. The formula so obtained does not contain any unknown constants. It is shown to be particularly accurate at large depths of embedment for which the Code formula overestimates the pull-out force.
