The large-scale xeromorphic woodland-savanna-grassfield ‘cerrado’ vegetation of central Brazil gradates to other vegetation types, both within its own region and along the border to neighbouring regions of other largescale vegetation types. These other vegetation types and their distinctions from cerrado are discussed. The Amazonian and northern tropical American savannas and grasslands are also considered and it is concluded that they should not be included in the cerrado concept.
