An unexpected appearance of Steiner's hypocycloid

Abstract

Sind in der reellen affinen Ebene zwei Parabeln \(p_ 1,p_ 2\) mit parallelen Achsen (der Richtung \(r\)) gegeben derart, daß \(p_ 1\) die Seiten eines gegebenen Dreiecks \(D\) berührt und \(p_ 2\) durch die Seitenmitten von \(D\) geht, so berühren \(p_ 1,p_ 2\) einander nach de Cicco (1939) in einem Punkt \(B=B(r)\); dieser durchläuft nach Coxeter (1983, 1985) bei Variation von \(r\) (und festgehaltenem \(D\)) eine rationale Kubik \(k\). Verf. dualisiert obigen Satz von de Cicco nach Erweiterung der affinen zur projektiven Ebene. An die Stelle von \(k\) tritt nun eine Kurve 3. Klasse; diese erweist sich als eine Kurve 4. Ordnung mit 3 Spitzen und ist projektiv äquivalent zur wohlbekannten Steinerschen (drei-spitzigen) Hypozykloide.
