Abstract

The above words, written in 1674, expressed the opinion of the Jesuit priest Antonio Vieira (1608-1697) concerning the Tribunal of the Holy Office of the Inquisition in Portugal.1 This opinion was based on his own experiences as a scholar, as a politician, as one accused by the Inquisition, and as a keen observer, enriched by information gathered over the course of a long relationship with the Jews.
