In order to provide effective training opportunities in the community, goals for training must be clarified, appropriate training locations must be identified, and proper supervision must be provided. Issues such as advocacy roles, change agent objectives, public health approaches, and community control must be clarified. Training locations, other than community mental health centers, could include anti-poverty organizations, mental health administrative offices, departments of human services, or model city programs. An apprenticeship type of training should gradually lead to independent tasks by the trainee based on a continuing evaluation of his training progress by the trainer. A critique of the setting, the learning process, and the training experience is needed to plan for a more effective training program.
