In 1980, eight family digesters were built in Guyana with sponsorship and supervision of the Latin-American Energy Organization (OLADE). This programme collapsed in 1983 because of the high costs of the construction materials and the lack of trained personnel to manage and operate the systems. In 1985 an agreement with China led to the construction of six digesters, the training of 15 persons in biogas construction techniques and of another 30 persons in operation and management techniques. This agreement finally led to 21 operational digesters. In the future the emphasis will be given to the development of medium size, industrial or commercial digesters. Opportunities exist in the large livestock farms away from the energy supply, the national distilleries and for the biomethanation of aquatic weeds infesting the waterways.
