Using a variation of Kelvin's vibrating capacitor technique a new method is described to measure contact potential differences (CPD). The main advantage of this pendulum device is the fact that the variation of CPD, performed, for example, by bombarding the electrode under investigation with an atomic beam, can be measured quasicontinously. The absolute experimental error is≲1 meV.
