A screening of nine Nitrobacter strains showed that Nitrobacter X14 and Nitrobacter Y possess plasmids designated as pNH1 and pNH2, respectively. The plasmids pNH1 and pNH2 had molecular weights of about 76 Mdal as estimated by agarose gel electrophoresis. They showed similar cleavage patterns when digested with EcoRI, HindIII or BamHI. Electron microscopic investigations exhibited that the plasmid pNH1 had a contour length of 36.9 μm corresponding to a molecular weight of 76 Mdal.
